As the percentage of Americans over 65 continues to increase, interest in the legal issues concerning the elderly continues to grow. Elder law as a recognized legal specialty is relatively new; however, it is a rapidly growing field. Elder law encompasses the range of legal problems that affect the care, comfort, and financial well-being of the aged person. This course will attempt to give an overview of many of these issues and their interaction, focusing on the statutory provisions affecting the elderly client with special attention to broader policy and ethical issues. This course is intended as an introduction to the practice area of elder law as a specialty. It should also be of interest to those persons whose family situations necessitate giving advice on the included topics.
