Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS), at Florida International University, offers a variety of convenient, non-traditional learning opportunities and a technologically advanced environment to facilitate professional and personal enhancement for the local and global communities. Our commitment to academic and professional excellence is focused on developing and strengthening rewarding in-demand credit and non-credit programs. We provide a diverse array of certificates, distance learning opportunities, on-line instruction, workshops, customized and professional training, personal enrichment courses and more.

To better accommodate the busy schedules of working adults, many CAPS programs and courses are offered on weekday evenings and on Saturdays and are taught at easily accessible locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, including our award-winning Kovens Conference Center. You may also choose the time and the pace that best suits your schedule by taking web-based courses or enrolling in a completely online degree program.

Our courses and programs can be customized to fulfill your professional development and personal enrichment needs. CAPS is currently comprised of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Legal Studies Institute, the Multicultural Training Institute, Professional Development Programs, and over 2,000 web-based, self-directed courses among other continuing education opportunities. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Enjoy non-credit personal enrichment courses and strengthen your knowledge of current and historical events, learn a new hobby, or study the literature and music of a foreign country. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers students of all ages and educational backgrounds the opportunity to study a wide range of topics taught by FIU instructors and community experts in their fields. Courses are taught during both the day and evening during the fall, winter and spring/summer at the award-winning Kovens Conference Center.

Dual Enrollment — Dual enrollment is a program that allows high school students to simultaneously earn college or vocational credit toward a postsecondary diploma, certificate, or degree at a Florida public institution and credit toward a high school diploma. Dual enrollment courses are free to students who attend a Florida public college or university; this includes registration, matriculation, or laboratory fees for courses taken through dual enrollment. Instructional materials (such as books) are provided to public school students free of charge; however, students enrolled in home education programs or nonpublic secondary schools must provide their own materials.

Legal Studies Institute (LSI) —Whether you are already in the legal field or looking for a new career path, the Legal Studies Institute has programs and courses that have been created to assist legal professionals on all levels. Paralegals, legal secretaries, and law office managers can improve their existing skills and receive the training and certification that will set them apart from their colleagues. Attorneys can stay updated and informed with seminars and courses such as Immigration Law and Fundamental Skills for the New Lawyer that also offer Continuing Legal Education Units from the Florida Bar. The Legal Studies Institute also offers the Medical/Legal Consultant and Pre-Licensing Risk Management Certificate Programs for healthcare professionals.

Multicultural Training Institute (MTI) Learn about quality control management, business management or the techniques needed to become successful in the acting and production industry in Spanish, Comparative Law in French or International Business in Portuguese. By providing courses in various disciplines and languages, the Multicultural Training Institute promotes the culture of continuous quality training as well as makes sure that the courses and programs respond to the requirements of the local and global communities. In order to carry out its mission successfully, MTI develops excellent quality certificate programs with top of the line instructors known locally and internationally.  Keeping in mind the needs of the various communities and their schedule, MTI offers short term programs with flexible hours that can be imparted either at the university or at your place of work.

Professional Development Programs— Enhance or change your career goals with courses geared to developing and strengthening your professional skills in the fields of business, education, and healthcare, among others. Our Professional Development Programs consist of courses and programs such as Coaching Skills Program, which provides students with basic coaching competencies. Additionally, we have an inventory of over 2,000 web-based, self-directed courses that can be customized towards your professional needs. Many courses may lead to the attainment of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and/or certificates of completion from Florida International University.
